Frequently Asked Questions

What is the process for applying for housing?
Eligibility for living in the house is satisfied if you are a Univeristy of Iowa professional student, or a professional student of another university doing an away rotation at Iowa. We reserve the right to grant priority to residents intending to stay for the full year, medical students over other professional students, etc., but once we confirm a room is held for you we won’t give it away to someone else. We require a $300 security deposit, which is refunded when you check out provided no damages are incurred as a result of your stay. Rooms are assigned based upon the date which the deposit is received. If you would like to reserve a room, contact us with your desired dates of arrival and departure, and we will confirm whether we can offer you an available room. You may then mail a check or money order for your deposit, but make sure you let us know to expect its arrival in the mail. Once the deposit is received, we will reserve your room.

What will be provided in my room?
Most of the rooms are at least partially furnished with a twin-sized bed, a desk, a dresser, and a closet. Many residents choose to purchase their own furniture. We cannot guarantee what furniture will be in your room when you check in, but if you arrive and find yourself lacking, we will make every effort to locate additional needed furniture for you.

What do I need to bring with me?
Don’t forget sheets, a blanket, a pillow, an alarm clock, and personal toiletries (toothbrush, shampoo, etc.). You should also consider sandals to wear in the shower. We provide hand soap, dish soap, toilet paper, and paper towels. You will need your own laundry soap. Most of the residents have their own desktop or laptop computer, but make sure you have a wireless adapter if you want to connect to the internet. We currently have a desktop computer designated for resident use in the house library. You should consider bringing clothes hangers if you want to hang clothes in your closet. If you are traveling from another country, check to make sure you don’t need an electrical current converter (we are 120V AC).  You may bring your own furniture if you wish.

May I invite guests to stay the night?
You may have guests stay in your room. Guests are also welcome to use the common areas (TV room, kitchen, weight room, etc.), but residents have priority.

What is the weather like?
The Midwest is a land of extremes, with summer temperatures reaching 100+ degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) and winter temperatures reaching -10 F (-23 C). Thunderstorms are common in the spring and early summer, and snow and ice are common in the winter. Be prepared to walk or bike to classes in essentially any kind of weather.

Is the AKK house environment noisy?
It is less noisy than undergraduate fraternities and residence halls, but probably more noisy than a typical apartment. Most of us are in medical school, and studying is a priority. The walls are somewhat thin, but noise is rarely a big issue. When noise issues do arise, they are generally easily resolved.

Do I need a car?
It is about a 15 minute walk to the University hospital and the medical school, and about a 10 minute walk to the nearest bus stop. The nearest grocery store isn’t really within walking distance. However, most of the residents do have an automobile, so it isn’t difficult to catch a ride when you need one.

Are pets allowed?
Pets are not strictly disallowed, but our residents come first.  If you have an animal that makes noise and causes disturbance, sheds and exacerbates allergies, or otherwise disrupts life in the house, you will be asked to find another home for the pet or the pet and yourself.
