AKK in 2008

Alpha Kappa Kappa, built in 1925, is located at 339 Teeters Court, Iowa City, Iowa 52246.

AKK remains one of two medical fraternities remaining at the University of Iowa. The other remaining medical fraternity is Phi Rho. The main difference between the two fraternities is that Phi Rho costs about $150 more and provides food to its members. AKK does not include food in its rent, however all utilities and parking are included. Just this past year AKK created a website where potential students and alumni can take a virtual tour of the house. The website is:

AKK is currently entertaining bids for a new roof and will likely have it installed this spring as well as have some tuck pointing work done on the chimney and brick. Due to two recent ice storms one in February 2007 and one in early December 2007 a couple of trees will have to be removed to make way for the roofing crew.

An ice storm hit Iowa City in early December causing trees to bend and disrupted power for over a half million people in the Midwest. This photo shows ice that collected on the trees outside AKK days after the storm.

Medical school, not all study

For those of you who haven’t been to Iowa City for some time, a new casino was built just south of town in Riverside, Iowa. This Riverside Casino played host to the medical school “Crista Gala” (eerily similar to the crista galli which protrudes from the cribiform plate in the skull). The Crista Gala is the medical school’s new winter dance which takes place annually in February. This past year a number of students from AKK attended to represent the style and class AKK had to offer. The night went off without a hitch including a live band and exceptional dance moves being busted by members of AKK. The only flaw was that a snowstorm hit while everyone was down in Riverside making the trek home less than ideal. Everyone made it safely even if a few cars got stuck along the way.
